Olya was encouraged to make the journey to the United States after receiving a scholarship for a graduate program in art and design education at the prestigious design school, the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. With Pratt’s design departments ranked amongst the highest of “America’s Best Architecture and Design Schools” in 2008 by the Design Intelligence architecture and design journal, Olya knew this was an opportunity not to be missed!

‘I was a little nervous at first’, she confides as she reflects on her experience, ‘not about the Pratt workload, but about my English level. I had studied English throughout my education in Russia, but I just wasn’t certain about my level.’ It emerged that Olya’s English was no barrier to her studies, as she had enrolled in New York English courses before starting at Pratt.

The English courses, she admits, were the best idea to give her that necessary pre-course confidence. Even though she had options to study at an English course Los Angeles or an English course San Francisco, she decided that New York was the solution for her studies due to a family link with the city.

‘It was really, how do you say, killing two bird with one stone – I hope that’s the appropriate expression! I have family living in New York who I hadn’t seen for something like ten or fifteen years and the opportunity arose also to take English lessons New York. I didn’t need to think it over, I instantly applied for the English courses New York and I’m really glad that I did!’
